i only tried these for the first time recently and i was wowed by how amazing they tasted.
they don’t really look like much but if you have tried one then you will know what I’m going on about so i set about trying to make my own,
usually they would have black parts on top but mine just had it around the edge.
recipe
1 sheet puff pastry
6 egg yolks
150g caster sugar
2 tbsp cornflour
680 ml full fat milk
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cinnamon stick
piece of lemon peel
first make the custard
take a large saucepan and place a sieve over the top, dissolve the cornflour with milk, and strain the mixture into the saucepan.
next add the sugar, egg yolks, and vanilla extract into the milk, mix well.
add the cinnamon stick and lemon peel
Cook the mixture over a medium heat, mix constantly until it thickens.
pour through sift again into a bowl remove the cinnamon stick and lemon peel,
cover the custard with cling wrap and press the wrap down onto the surface of the custard, and set aside to cool.
roll out puff pastry into a rectangle then roll up into a tight cigar or log shape, then cut it into 1inch pieces,
grease the tart tins, i got mine from wholeport.com
then press each piece into the tin like the photo
preheat the oven to 200c
pour in cooled custard 3/4 way to the top and bake for 25 minutes
i dusted mine with icing sugar and cinnamon

I'm portuguese and I must tell you that I eat one of these, pastel de nata, every saturday morning. I usually go out with my husband and kids for breakfast and then after that we go for an expresso and a pastel de nata… It is my absolute syn 😉
But I do think that you did really well with yours. And if you come here to Portugal you must go to Belém and try the Pastel de Belém, it's a variation of the typical ones and very very famous 😉
