i thought butterfly cookies would make a sweet valentines gift, with the saying you give me the butterflies. but i wanted the wings to appear bent so i made a tray out of a disposable foil one.
to make the cookies you will need
cookie dough recipe see here
butterfly cutters
tin tray
rolling pin
royal icing
blossom tints in yellow peach black and white
fine paint brush
cup of water
once you have made your dough, take a foil baking tray and cut the sides off and fold it like a fan and open it back out, place this on a baking tray. roll out the dough ad use the cutters to make the butterfly shapes and place them on the folded tray with the centre in the middle of the fold so that they look 3d,
once they are cooked leave them on the foil to cool and harden.
then roll out some white royal icing and use the cutters and so get the shape and stick the icing to the cookies. because they have bent wings you will need to reshape it slightly to fit. roll some thin long pieces of icing for the body of the butterfly
they you need to get your blossom tints, you can mix it with water or clear alcohol to form a paint. first paint the centre of the butterfly with the peach colour and then add the yellow, (i used a champagne colour) and paint the edges of the wings and use a wet brush to blend the colours together where they meet.
once this is dry mix up some black blossom tints and paint the body parts and place them on, then paint around the edge and the corners of each wing, using a really fine brush make some vein like lines spanning out from the body to the edges of the wings, and to finish add some white circles on the black parts on the ends of the wings
